Early life and playing career

Gareth Southgate was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, on 3 September 1970. He began his playing career at Crystal Palace, before moving to Aston Villa in 1995. He also played for Middlesbrough, Southampton, and Blackburn Rovers, before retiring in 2006.

Southgate was a versatile player, who could play in a number of positions, including centre-back, full-back, and defensive midfield. He was known for his leadership skills and his ability to read the game.

Coaching career

After retiring from playing, Southgate worked as a coach at Middlesbrough and England youth teams. He was manager of the England under-21 team from 2013 to 2016.
