MSI 2024: New Format, New Stakes
Bigger, Better, and More Competitive
Riot Games is shaking up the League of Legends esports landscape with major changes to its 2024 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI). This year, MSI will not only be a showcase of the best teams from around the world but also a crucial stepping stone on the path to Worlds 2024.
Qualifying for Worlds
The most significant change to MSI 2024 is the addition of Worlds qualification. For the first time, the winner of MSI will automatically qualify for the League of Legends World Championship, the most prestigious event in the esports calendar. This major stakes increase adds an extra layer of intensity to the tournament, as teams will now be competing not only for regional bragging rights but also for a coveted ticket to Worlds.
Two Weeks of Action
MSI 2024 will take place over two weeks, from May 1 to May 19, in Chengdu, China. The tournament will feature 12 teams from all major regions, including LCK, LPL, LEC, LCS, LJL, PCS, and CBLOL. The teams will compete in a double round-robin group stage followed by a single-elimination playoff bracket.
A Season-Defining Tournament
With the addition of Worlds qualification and two weeks of intense action, MSI 2024 is set to be the most important and competitive MSI to date. The tournament will serve as a major test for teams ahead of Worlds and will provide fans with an unforgettable spectacle of League of Legends esports.
